Fort Gass

Did you know that there had been a fort alongside the Whitewater River?
The fort was named Fort Gass. According to the U.S. Geographical Survey, dated March 1, 1994, the fort is listed as historical with no existing features.

On old maps found, the fort is shown to have been situated on the east side riverbank of the Whitewater River. The property is now owned by Cincinnati Incorporated. The only information obtained about this fort is the latitude and longitude of where it once stood.

There is no known information of its dates of existence or who built it. It is safe to say that it was built or used by someone named Gass. It is also interesting to note that upon researching, it was discovered that a Patrick Gass was a known fort builder. He was also on the Lewis and Clark expedition.
